What can I do?
Exercise:
Physical therapy and regular exercise can help you keep in optimum shape. It would be good to discuss with your doctor what treatment or what exercise program would be appropriate for you. You may need to have regular physiotherapy sessions or to do some exercises at home. For some people that includes swimming sessions , yoga and horseback riding. In addition to maintaining a good muscle tone, exercise is a way to relax. National MS Society or local organization (in your town) can help with exercise programs or facilities or can recommend specialized personnel for such activities.
Diets :
Over the years there have been set several diets for MS, which is normal for a disease for which no known causes or method of healing is known. While diets contradict each other, the philosophy behind them is very good: a balanced diet that will provide vitamins and minerals you need. Some people have noticed that for them the most beneficial diet is one low in animal fat and rich in polyunsaturated fat. Read also the section [Alternative treatment]. It is advisable to discuss regime change in your food with your doctor or dietitian.
Work Planning :
Because MS can make changes in your physical and cognitive abilities is advisable to realistically evaluate how these changes will affect your present job. If the work place will require physical effort ,it would be better to search or prepare yourself for another less demanding job. If you have a sedentary job, the physical handicap will not affect very much, allowing you to keep your position for many years. In your town there may be offices for career counseling or vocational training courses.
Changes in family:
One of the most difficult problems for a couple after diagnosis of MS is the possibility of changing tasks. The future possibilities must be considered together. A family with two sources of income will have to learn to deal only with a salary (if the situation does not allow the person with MS to keep the workplace). One of the partners will have to assume additional tasks in the home management and childcare and / or to be get along with the other partners rhythm to carry out certain tasks. To successfully implement these changes there must have place open and complete discussions.
